In the days leading up to the marathon Deriba Merga was quoted as saying he doesn't finish a race if he expects to finish outside the top 3. He will quit. That is was the reason for his DNF's earlier this year.

In this video from the post race press conference a reporter asked him to elaborate on that philosophy a bit.

Through an interpreter he responded, "I am in very good condition, I was going for the number one spot, so I'm not very happy with this race".

He was then asked if he enjoys watching any American sports such as baseball or basketball while in the U.S., to which he replied, "Yes, I would very much like a cheeseburger".
