Get Ready To Get Happy

Lots of big news this weekend:
Ryan Hall has dropped out of the New Orleans Half.
Sammy Wanjiru was added to the New Orleans Half.
Bernard Lagat won his record 8Th Wanamaker Mile beating Kiprop in NYC.
Lots of other indoor(yawn) action.
But the biggest most exciting news is Terrence Trammell has started his own apparel line called "Trackstar".
Terrence has been making and looking ridiculous in his own gear for a while now, and soon you be able to have your very own purple and gold unitard singlet, and purple shoe covers just like Terrence!

Only in the dirty south. You'd never find a high school team being outfitted like that above the Mason-Dixon line.

American Marathon Depth List '09

I just spent way too much time putting this together. I tried to make it as accurate as possible and hopefully there are not too many mistakes, because I can barely read and write, and it's a miracle I've figured out how to use a computer. Feel free to email any issues you see with it, but realize that I probably won't care to fix them. If you don't see your name, sorry. Just edit yourself in so you can show your Mom how cool you are. If you ran slower than 2:35, train harder and run faster this year. I'm going to go do anything other than look at a computer screen for a few hours.

Xavier Carter Loves Weed And Guns

He even looks a little high in that picture.
http://www2.tbo.com/content/2010/jan/25/former-track-star-arrested-tampa/news-breaking/

Xavier Carter went pro after two years of college and signed a 6 year contract with Nike reportedly worth $750k(please let that be wrong) per year through the 2012 Olympics.
In '06 he ran, what was at the time, the 2nd fastest 200m of all time. It's now the 4th fastest of all time behind Michael Johnson, Tyson Gay, and Usain Bolt.
Since then he hasn't done much, other than get arrested 4 times. He's had some injury problems and didn't make the Olympic team in '08. In '09 he finished 5th in the 200m at US Champs and didn't make the final in the 400m.

So let him be a lesson to the kids out there; stay in school, and don't play with guns and smoke weed. Unless all you want to do is make tons of cash while fading into obscurity.

Video of the Day

Some interesting things about this race that we surely will never see again in a major marathon:

Winner - White(sorry Hall, don't see it happening)
Top 3 - White(Carlos Lopes is Portuguese, so, if not, close enough)
World Record - In the rain
Top 3 all held world records consecutively (Rob De Castella 12/6/81 - 10/21/84, Steve Jones 10/21/84 - 4/20/85, Carlos Lopes 4/20/85 - 4/17/88)

And no one in the top 3 was wearing a watch.
Fascinating...

Being a Track Star Looks Awesome

Jenny Barringer grabs a handful and signs some tits.
Not entirely clear if they are a woman's or man's though.

Geb vs Wanjiru- Ethiopia vs Kenya: Who Ya Got?

NKOTB Sammy Wanjiru is continuing his quest to become recognized as the greatest marathoner of all time by slapping around current throne holder, Haile Gebrselassie in the press this weekend.
Wanjiru raced in the Kenya Police Cross Country Championships where he finished 39th. And while after finishing 39th might not be the best time to start trash talking the GOAT, Sammy did exactly that.

http://www.standardmedia.co.ke/sports/InsidePage.php?id=2000001643&cid=39&story=Wanjiru%20rues%20missed%20chance%20of%20a%20record
"He does not competing strong runners from Kenya like (Martin) Lel, Robert Cheruiyot and myself. Look at the Kenyans entered in the Dubai Marathon he ran yesterday (Friday)? They are not strong. He has done well on track and marathons and credit goes to him for being the great runner he is, but his time is up. It is the turn of young runners like myself to own the world record."

and..

http://www.nation.co.ke/sports/athletics/-/1100/848108/-/re2qi8z/-/index.html
“Haile has really made the difference in marathon running. But he has reached the peak comparing his age and I do not think he is possible to run any faster,” said Wanjiru.

Hmm. Ok, that's kind of tame the way he said it, but I'm pretty sure what he means is, "He's too OLD. He can't run any faster. He's DONE. I'm 23. Gimme a break. I'll be in Berlin in Sept. to take the record from him and back to KENYA where it belongs. Your record is toast old man."

My impression from the article is Haile has had a contract with Berlin organizers where he basically picked the field. Which is kind of crazy. So now his contract is up, and now Sammy can collect his $250k appearance fee and show and go for the record. But does this mean Haile WON'T be running it? There is nowhere else to go for a record attempt.
I have a feeling Haile will forgo the Berlin record attempt(duck Wanjiru) and end up in NYC in November. He's stated his desire to run the NYC marathon before, and it was announced last week he will be running the NYC Half-marathon March 21st. Could end up being a bundle deal. It would really be a shame if the two of them never go head to head. It would be great for the sport, so it probably won't happen.

Whoa

This morning I found myself face to face with Jenny Barringer in Central Park.
It's a small, small world. And that's why you shouldn't talk shit about people on the internet. Lucky for me, nobody reads this or it could have been awkward.

But just in case, I'd like to cover my tracks and get back on her good side by saying, she looked really good. Like, really, really good. Super good. She is fit like a MF'er.

There, now we can be friends, and possibly more should the marriage thing not work out.

Aerobic Base: Bigger Is Better.

Or, "A Fundamental Foundation
Developing a big aerobic base"
By Pete Pfitzinger, M.S.(2 Time Olympian and exercise physiologist)
As featured in the November 2004 issue of Running Times Magazine

"How does a big aerobic base improve your running performance?

Your cardiovascular system consists of a series of steps that bring oxygen from your lungs to the mitochondria in your muscle fibers. Aerobic base training produces a wide range of positive adaptations that optimize your cardiovascular system and improve your ability to produce energy aerobically.

One of the most important adaptations to aerobic base training is an increase in the number of capillaries surrounding the muscle fibers. Capillaries are the transportation system for your muscle fibers, bringing oxygen and fuels in and waste products, such as carbon dioxide, out. By increasing the number of capillaries per muscle fiber, base training improves the ability to provide oxygen to the individual muscle fibers.

Other important adaptations to aerobic base training increase the ability of your muscle fibers to use that oxygen to produce energy aerobically. Mitochondria are your muscles’ aerobic energy factories. Base training increases the number and size of the mitochondria in your muscle fibers and also improves the efficiency of the mitochondria by increasing the activity of aerobic enzymes. These adaptations reduce your lactate levels and allow your muscles to use more fat and less carbohydrate to run at a given speed. A big aerobic base helps improve your ability to recover from training and enables you to handle more high-intensity training such as tempo runs, VO2-max intervals, and speed work."

That's Inappropriate

You probably didn't watch the press conference because you have a life, but I don't, so I did.
And it was every bit as exciting as you can imagine it would be.
It was long, so I'll sum it up for you: Jenny is the newest member of the New Balance team which is now made up of her, James Carney, Fasil Bizuneh,.... and I think that's it. That's the team.
So Jenny took the stage and began talking, and talking, and talking. Talking about her decision to go with NB, about the past, about the future. After 20 min. the mic was turned off and she was still standing there talking. One by one everyone got up and left, and she was still talking. The lights were turned off and she was still talking... I took a nap, woke up, and she was still talking. She mentioned somewhere in there that she'll be running everything from 800 to 5k.

Then she sat down for an after interview with Flotrack and talked for another 10 minutes.
(Jenny loves to talk. And her favorite subject is herself)

Everything I said is true and you can watch it for yourself here

God bless her though. She will probably hold every AR from mile up within a few years. Girl's got the goods.

Hope It Doesn't Bounce

Haile Gebrselassie wins Dubai marathon

Jenny Barringer

Jenny has signed with a shoe sponsor and will be making the big announcement today, at 12:30et on Flotrack.
I've already heard that's it New Balance, and now you have too.

Deena Is Coo Coo.

Track and Field Videos on Flotrack

She thinks she can run 2:18 in London.
I love Deena, but c'mon.

I will eat my hat live on Flotrack if she runs within 2 minutes of 2:18.

Geb Wins. Misses Record. By A Lot.

2:06:09. Good time. Not great.
Haile was never on pace for the record and the $1million bonus, and good thing because if you haven't heard, Dubai is broke. They don't even have a million dollars.

14:54 5k
29:42 10k
1:02:51 at half
Complete splits here

While averaging 3:00/k for the race, he blazed the final kilometer in 2:36, which is fucking awesome. That's 13min 5K pace. Which is the road 5k world record. So yeah, safe to say he had a little gas left in the tank after 26 miles.

Afterward, he blamed a sore back from sleeping wrong for not feeling good enough to go for the record.
I've heard he actually sleeps on piles of money, which can't be good for your back. So it's plausible, but he should have just said it was a "tempo run", or a "tune-up for Berlin", where he will REALLY try to break the record.

"The Great One" will most likely be back in Berlin this Sept. to take yet another swing at lowering his 2:03:59 record. But does he still have what it takes? Probably. But I think he needs to go up against Wanjiru to do it. Gettin' old and could be his last real chance at it, but I would not count him out yet.

Oh. That's Nice.

Molisa Daska of Ethiopia took the womens race in 2:24:18, winning by just 8 seconds over Aberu Shewaye, and was so excited she puked all over herself.
She looks great in pink and gray though. Love it girl.

Enjoy The Sufference

"To enjoy training doesn't mean to train easy, but to train with the max motivation. This is possible when the athlete has full confidence in his training.
Every top champion well knows that SOME session of his training must be very, very tough. But, when this is HIS PERSONAL CHOICE, coming from his mind because he is fully confident in what is doing, he can accept, and also enjoy, the highest level of sufference".

Wise Words From Brett Gotcher

http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=18598

RT: Any post-race revelations?

BG: I guess one of the things I want people to realize is that you’re not going to run 2:10 if you go out in 67 minutes. You’ve got to go for it. And hopefully other guys that see me doing that are going to start doing it and we’re going to start seeing a lot more Americans running 2:10s and under. The half marathon in Houston was a good example of that. There were a lot of guys in that race who had never run half marathons before and they were PR’ing by minutes, and it’s because they were going for it. They have confidence and they say, ‘if this guy is doing it, I’m going to go for it, too.’ And then they do it and that’s all it takes. It just takes one person to kind of change the way you think, and all of a sudden everyone is going to start doing it. I think we’re going to start seeing some very fast marathons and hopefully more Americans going to Houston to run, because it’s a very fast course.

100% agree and believe the tide is really turning with American distance running. The expectation of mediocrity is giving way. AND the credit starts with Hall running sub 60 and 2:06, Sell getting an Olympic spot("if that guy can do it, so can I"), then goes to Ritz running 12:56 and taking bronze in World Half, which led to Teg's 12:58, then Meb winning NYC in of the best marathon fields EVER assembled.
So now you see some top all-time US half times out of some young and inexperienced guys this past weekend, and Gotcher runs 2:10 in his first marathon.

Without Olympics or World's this year, we should expect to see a lot of guys going for broke with their training and racing and hopefully getting some really fast times. By American standards, of course...

And I should not forget the girls, just because they run so much slower than us, because the girls are getting there too, picking up Olympic and World bronze(cough)medals. Although they are still seriously lacking in depth beyond Kara, Shalane, and Deena at 5k and up.

C'mon girls, it's 2010, you can take off the aprons and get out of the kitchen now. Your boyfriend can make his own tuna helper. It's not that hard. Go for a run.

Geb Going For World Record and $1,000,000 Friday

http://www.iaaf.org/news/kind=100/newsid=55343.html

He dismissed the notion that his first half in 61min 45sec, 2:03:30 pace, in 2008 might have been too fast. “I didn’t run too fast, I want to do the same on Friday.

Want to quit running? Me too.

His two victories here have netted him half a million dollars, since the race was upgraded in 2008 with a million dollars prize money, with a first prize of $250,000, for both men and women. But there is also the little matter of a million dollar bonus for a World record, offered by Dubai Holding.

Want to start running again? Yeah, me too.

Video of the Day

A little somethin' for the ladies today.

Have you ever wondered what Dathan Ritzenhein would sound like rapping?
How about James Carney?
Ryan Hall??

Well here's 14:52 5k'er, and aspiring rapper Justin Jackson, with some raps about running.

It's either, not as bad as you think it will be, or, worse. But you are gonna have to listen to find out.

http://soundcloud.com/justinjackson26

But Of Course

I just finished reading an after race interview with Terrence Mahon, which I don't have to link you to, where he says Ryan was merely running a tempo on Sunday,.. just a little slower than he expected. He only wanted to get some early miles at goal pace for New Orleans.

Well, every race I've run where I didn't PR or win was also a "tempo run". So I believe it.

Anyway, I guess this means Ryan is gunning for sub 59:00 in New Orleans..??

Kastor Wins, Hall Lays An Egg at R'n'R Arizona Half

After a string of sub-par performances, soon to turn 37 y-o Deena Kastor showed she isn't washed up yet by running a course/state record 1:09:43. It was a decisive win over Isla Paulson who ran 1:17:04(yikes).
Sure would have been nice to see Deena and Shalane go head to head this weekend instead...

Meenwhile, AR holder Ryan Hall went through two miles in 9 even(sub 59:00 pace), only to blow up and finish second to Canada's Simon Bairu(1:02:47) in 1:04:08. Brooks-Hanson's runners Luke Humphrey(1:06:02) and Mike Morgan(1:06:09)was this a workout or a race?) took 3rd and 4th.
Got to appreciate Hall's aggressive start and going big, but that finish time is disappointing to see. His time would have put him 13th in the US Champs race.

Hall will race another half in New Orleans on Feb. 28th as he prepares for the Boston Marathon in April.

*edit* What is up with those bib #'s??

Gotcher 2:10:35

McMillan Elite runner Brett Gotcher ran the 4th fastest USA debut marathon time in Houston,
but still lost to the guy in cowboy hat.

US Debut marathon all-time list:

2:12:27 2:12:27 Fernando Cabada (24) Fukuoka 2006 (9)

Houston Half Marathon 1/17/10

Shalane Flanagan(1:09:41) and Antonio Vega(1:01:54) took home the National Championships and $12,000 each for their wins.
Shalane took home an additional $4,000 for setting a new course record, bettering the previous mark by a minute and 14 seconds.

The men's field was a little watered down without Hall, Ritz, Meb, Carney, Fasil, Cabada, and Carlson toeing the line. Hall chose to run the R'n'R Arizona Half on the same day. Carney was on the entry list, but didn't start.
