The Winds Of Boston, In Pictures

Woman's start. Looks like a headwind...
Still looks like a headwind...

                                                 Flags blowing at them...

                                                         Side wind...

Side wind..
                                                 Side wind.....
Flag never moves...
                                                Side wind...

                                       Head wind....
Droopy flag..

Holding up a giant cardboard sign with one hand is not a problem in 20mph wind...

                                             Towel never moves.

I'm not trying to say there was no wind. There was wind. At times there was a tail wind. At times the tail wind looked strong. Not very often though. If you go back and watch the race, it's very difficult to find ANY sign of wind in much of the race. Nobody's hair is moving. No jackets flapping, clothing moving, nothing.
Then there are all these spots where it shows a headwind, or side wind. How much did the wind really help? Perhaps a lot less than people first thought.

  1. Thanks for the fun analysis...and I feel much like you, the athletes deserve more credit than they are getting. I'd like to hear from the athletes themselves if they felt the wind was constantly at their back or not...

  2. I ran it (not an elite of course). It felt like running on a treadmill in a gym... Just calm air 99% of the time. I actually found it to be rather hot and uncomfortable. Ive run with good tailwinds and this did not feel like that. Just sayin...

  3. Good analysis--I was there and I noticed a tailwind at times, but not as much as I noticed a crosswind an even a headwind a couple times.
